POSITION:

Instructional Aide – Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Associates Degree required;
  2. Experience with educationally disabled pupils preferred;
  3. Knowledge of child growth and development;
  4. Appropriate classroom practices;
  5. Good oral and written communication skills.
  6. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

REPORTS TO:

Principal/Classroom Teacher

JOB GOAL:

To aid the teacher in carrying out the educational program with identified students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Is responsible for assuming a tutorial role for individual special education students or small groups of special education children.
  2. Carries out the instructional program as outlined by the teacher. Non-instructional tasks directly related to the instructional aide’s instructional responsibility shall be his/her duty to execute.
  3. Clarifies teacher’s directions to individuals.
  4. Assures that assigned work is completed.
  5. Helps with seat work after the teacher has taught the class or group a specific skill.
  6. Assists a student in a specific area of study, individually or in a small group.
  7. Communicates with students to help them discover how to apply learned skills to real-life situations outside the classroom.
  8. Prepares teaching aids and other instructional material as required.
  9. Assists in the execution of the daily lessons as prescribed by the teacher.
  10. Performs special assignments as prescribed by the building principal.
  11. Attends meetings and conferences regarding pupils when deemed appropriate by the building principal.
  12. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
  13. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  14. Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students as prescribed by the teacher.
  15. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
  16. Helps very young students with their clothing, snack time routine, and toileting activities.
  17. Participates in in-service training as assigned.
  18. Reinforce skills taught in classrooms by teachers.
  19. Provide support to students and teachers when students go to the community for the purpose of community based instructions when required.
  20. Performs other duties as prescribed by the Board of Education.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

10 MONTHS. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of policies and procedures on the evaluation of paraprofessional staff.
