School Social Worker

QUALIFICATIONS:

As determined by New Jersey state certification requirements and the Bridgeton Board of Education

REPORTS TO:

Director of Student Support Services and/or other appropriately certificated superior as designated by the Superintendent

JOB GOAL:

The School Social Worker collects social history data and analyzes the personal and social history of pupils within the educational system. Through observation, consultation and interpretation of the data collected, the School Social Worker determines the developmental, familial, educational and social interactional characteristics that are significant for educational placement and program planning.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Compiles and analyzes a pupil’s social and educational history.
  2. Consults with parents and school personnel in interpreting the social history data.
  3. Plans special placement or treatment programs within his/her area of responsibility.
  4. Formulates a social diagnosis as a basis for effecting personal and/or environmental changes to help the pupil.
  5. Upon referral, checks on chronic absences and offers counseling and remediation.
  6. Becomes involved in community activities and contributes to policy and curriculum changes through reporting on community attitudes and trends to be school administration.
  7. Counsels pupils whose behavior or school progress indicates need for individual guidance.
  8. Acts as coordinator between the school and other agencies and individuals in the community offering services in behalf of the student and/or his family, including child guidance clinics, protective services, doctors and ministers, and refers individuals to community agencies to secure recommended services for the pupil or family.
  9. Consults with parents, encouraging them to become more involved with school personnel and programs to facilitate more favorable conditions for the student, regarding school work, behavior, attendance and the interests of their child.
  10. In some cases, renders assistance to needy families by securing and arranging for clothing, shoes and other social needs as they arrive.
  11. Arranges for medical examinations for those students referred to the Child Study Team.
  12. Serves as chairperson of staffings and meetings as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.
  13. Participates on a Child Study Team in determining eligibility of classification and planning of educational programs for students.
  14. Provides inservice for the instructional staff and other school personnel.
  15. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  16. Assists in the supervision of students as the need arises, both in the school building and on the school grounds, as directed by the school administrator.
  17. Seeks the assistance of the school staff or help meet the needs of assigned students.
  18. Serves as case manager for special education students as assigned.
  19. Coordinates the development, monitors, and evaluates the effectiveness of the Individualized Education Program (IEIP).
  20. Provides related services to pupils with educational disabilities when appropriate.
  21. Provides preventative and support services to non-disabled pupils when appropriate.
  22. Assists students to assume responsibility for realistic educational career planning.
  23. Maintains communication with appropriate persons and conducts follow-up procedures with school and home to ascertain resolution of problems.
  24. Keeps sufficient records of students to prepare and submit required reports to administrators and referring staff.
  25. Provides services to the general education staff regarding techniques, materials, and programs for pupils experiencing difficulties in learning.
  26. Performs other related duties as assigned.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

10 Months. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
