The Health & Wellness Committee develops, implements, monitors, and reviews the district's menus and nutrition and physical activity policies. Meetings are held five times a year and all members of the community and staff are welcome. The mission of the committee is to promote healthful behavior in the school by encouraging its students to consume fresh fruits, vegetables, lowfat milk and whole grains. As well as, encouraging students to select and consume all components of the school meal.
Reasons for the Wellness Policy:
- Children need access to healthful foods and opportunities to be physically active in order to grow, learn, and thrive
- Good health fosters student attendance and education
- Obesity rates have doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over the last two decades
- Physical inactivity and excessive calorie intake are the predominant causes of obesity
- Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are responsible for two-thirds of deaths in the United States
- Unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and obesity, often are established in childhood
