The goal of Bridgeton Public Schools is to provide a comprehensive literacy program that integrates the five modes of language (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing) within a rigorous, supportive, and engaging environment. We will provide opportunities that will develop each student’s ability to use language to think, explore, discover, create and express their ideas with confidence and clarity which in turn will enrich their daily experiences and increase their lifelong opportunities. We believe that all students have an equal right to a quality comprehensive literacy educational program regardless of socioeconomic background, academic ability, native language, and/or physical challenges.
All students will receive grade level and developmentally appropriate instruction as outlined in the expectations of the Common Core Standards or recommended due to student interests, state mandates, and board policy. Students will receive instruction in foundational reading skills, rigorous academic vocabulary, reading and comprehending complex text, and writing in response to such text.
Language Arts Literacy instruction in grades K-5 is organized using Reading and Writing Workshop frameworks. Daily students will have opportunities for large and small group instruction that consist of close reading strategies, vocabulary development, analyzing text and narrative, informational, opinion and research writing. Students in grades K-4 receive a minimum of 120-minutes of literacy instruction daily instruction. Fifth-grade students will receive 80-minutes. Students in grades K-5 participate in guided reading daily.
Language Arts Literacy instruction for students in grades 6-8 will use the Literacy workshop format. We provide a minimum of 80 minutes of literacy instruction for students in grades 6-8. Middle grades students participate in the following novel studies: grade 6 Watsons Go to Birmingham and Esperanza Rising; grade 7 Maniac Magee and Hatchet and grade 8 The Giver, Tuck Everlasting, and Romiette and Julio. Reading and writing are taught daily in all content areas.
Our 9th - 12th-grade students experience language arts courses that are designed to introduce students to the skills they need to analyze a variety of both narrative and informational texts that feature themes important to young adults. The level of rigor of each course is aligned with the expectations of the Common Core. Writing activities emphasize skills necessary for entrance into college and the workplace. Professional learning communities comprised of language arts and special education teachers continue to implement action research projects that target reading strategies, writing formats, vocabulary, and the conventions of standardized English.
