Recent Incidents at Bridgeton High School
February 2, 2023
Dear Parents and Bridgeton Community:
As you may have heard through our local news outlets, over the weekend, we regretfully lost one of our Bridgeton High
School students and another student was injured during the early morning hours of Sunday, January 29th. Connected to that
incident, there have been several additional confrontations between groups of students occurring during dismissal at the
high school.
Additionally, several threats of retaliation have been made this week. Each was reported to the Bridgeton Police Department,
investigated, and taken seriously. In response to this week’s incidents and this weekend’s tragic shooting, we responded
with the following:
- Heightened police presence at the start and end of the school day.
- Bridgeton Police Officers walking through Bridgeton High School regularly throughout the day, alongside our in-district
officers and security.
- Additional officers and security are present during after-school activities.
Several of the individuals involved in this weekend’s shootings are in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing. If
you have any information surrounding this weekend’s events, please contact Bridgeton Police. Students involved in
altercations at BHS, believed to be connected with this weekend’s events, have been identified and are being addressed. We
will continue to subject all visitors and students to a metal detector screening as they enter the building and maintain
an increased police presence until further notice. We will also continue to investigate and report all threats made to our
school community to local law enforcement.
With our current structures and the heightened security measures we have in place, we feel the safest place for our students
is in school. If, for some reason, you feel your child is in immediate danger, please contact the school and the police.
We appreciate your continued support; thank you for partnering with us to ensure the continued safety of our students and
school community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Keith Miles, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools
