POSITION:
SUPERVISOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- A valid New Jersey School Supervisor Certificate and or Principal Certification Preferred.
- Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, procedures and reporting requirements.
- Ability to effectively administer special education instructional programs and to work with parents, community groups and agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, parents and students in the areas of special education.
- Strong- PreK-12 Special Education Instructional and Child Study Team Background Preferred.
REPORTS TO:
ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION/STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES.
JOB GOAL:
Oversee and supervise special education instructional programs, serve as liaison with Instruction, work with principals and vice principals in the development of all special education programs and serve as a resource with regard to curriculum, instructions and assessments pertaining to scheduling and special education instructional programs.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in providing leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of district’s special education instructional programs and staff; coordinates and supervises professional development for special education staff from PreK-12.
- Ensures implementation of IEP’s in all Special Education Classes from PreK-12.
- Provides oversight in the scheduling and assignment of teachers and instructional aides to ensure compliance with all IEP mandated services.
- Conducts professional development to all special education teachers/ instructional aides and assist school principals and vice principals in conducting special education teachers/aides’ evaluations.
- Directs the planning and appropriate staffing and supervision of the special education extended school year program or after school program.
- Knowledge and use of IEP System, Genesis, NJ Smart and Semi.
- Knowledge and use of Achieve 3000; Imagine Learning Literacy; ixl; Orton Gillingham and any other research-based reading and math programs purchased by the district.
- Hold parent and/or student conferences.
- Must attend weekly/biweekly meetings with Curriculum and Instruction Department. Assist and Collaborate in the development and selection of curriculum writing, selection of curriculum guides and core/supplementary materials for special education staff and students.
- Implements assigned programs and/or projects for the purpose of conforming to district and state curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
- Act as Liaison between Child Study Teams and the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Student Services.
- Keep the Assistant Superintendent informed regarding progress toward goal achievement and any potential problems with the programs.
- Conducts internal audit quarterly in the areas of special education students Academic Benchmark results and SEL results in order to close the achievement gaps for special education students.
- Must regularly progress monitor special education student achievement data and rectify possible academic and SEL gaps.
- Must work closely with Inclusion Teachers to ensure equity of delivery of instructions. Must ensure regular training of Inclusion Teachers districtwide.
- Perform all other related duties as required by the position or assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Student Services.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve Months
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
