High School Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid NJ Principal Certificate of Eligibility or Standard
  2. A minimum of three years of school leadership and/or central office administrator experience.
  3. Demonstrated leadership capability in the areas
  4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  5. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S Citizenship or legal resident alien status.

JOB GOAL:

To provide leadership and managerial oversight to the instructional program and school operations to ensure a school climate that fosters the educational development of each pupil.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Shall be on duty in his/her building at least thirty minutes before the regular opening session in the morning and remain at least one hour after the close of the afternoon session. This conforms to the ABA contract.
  2. Creates a climate that is conducive to experimentation and in which teachers can share ideas.
  3. Is responsible for organizing staff and conducting inservice for the development and improvement of curriculum.
  4. Keeps abreast of the newest technological improvements and educational practices.
  5. Continuously evaluates the educational needs of the school.
  6. Efficiently uses the resources of support personnel services.
  7. Is responsible for supervising the updating of pupil records and maintaining complete and accurate records for each pupil.
  8. Establishes and maintains a code of discipline.
  9. Provides for the educational placement of all pupils within the school.
  10. Helps strengthen the relationship between parents and teachers in the interest of the child.
  11. Prepares an annual budget reflecting school needs and program.
  12. Develops individual school policies within established structure that best meet the needs of the school.
  13. Insures that the plan safeguards the safety, health and well being of all.
  14. Cooperates in recruiting, interviewing, evaluating and recommending candidates.
  15. Evaluates all professional and non-professional staff in accordance with Board of Education policy.
  16. Insures proper implementation of negotiated contract between the teachers’ bargaining unit and the Board of Education.
  17. Reports promptly any neglect of duty on the part of any teacher or any employee to the Office of the Superintendent.
  18. Submits all communications to the Board from the principals, supervisors, teachers or other employees through the Superintendent. Nothing in this paragraph shall be construed as denying the right of any member in the school system to appeal to the Board of Education.
  19. Creates master schedule and assigns teachers and pupils to their proper places.
  20. Is responsible for the reception, classification, conduct, health, promotion or retention of pupils within the building.
  21. Facilitates the implementation of instructional materials.
  22. Is responsible for all textbooks, supplies and equipment delivered to his/her building and shall keep a correct record of the various books and equipment received. A continuous and complete inventory shall be kept on file in the Principal’s Office. A copy of the same shall be sent to the Superintendent and the Business Administrator. Each principal shall require teachers to record the names of pupils and numbers of books given to each pupil. When books are returned, he/she shall require teachers to examine the same, and, if the books are found to be damaged, to assess pupils a sum commensurate with the damage done.
  23. Keeps an itemized account of all money received for damaged books, lost books, or damage to school property, etc. A receipt will be given for all cash transactions and in June a report shall be made and all money received from this source shall be paid to the Office of the Business Administrator.
  24. Submits at the appointed time requisitions for necessary supplies, books and equipment and other budgetary items for the coming year, as may be required for his/her building.
  25. Supervises the preparation of the School Activities Calendar prior to the opening of school, subject to revision from time to time, if necessary.
  26. Shall have charge of all suspensions and be responsible for immediately notifying the pupil’s parents/guardians of the reason for and the duration of the suspension.
  27. Assists in the designing of new educational programs.
  28. Helps in the establishment and clarification of short and long-range goals.
  29. Acts as a resource in curriculum development.
  30. Projects the philosophy, objectives, conditions and needs of the school to the community.
  31. Works in harmony with the community to define a sound educational program that recognizes the needs of a changing society.
  32. Utilizes community resources to enrich the learning program.
  33. Participates in workshops, conferences, district committees, and renders service by participating in professional organizations at national, state and local levels.
  34. Opens the school to outside groups as directed by the Superintendent.
  35. Communicates to staff, students, parents, community and central office administration.
  36. Assists in the supervision of students as the need arises within the school district, as directed by the Superintendent.
  37. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  38. Is responsible for the testing program and reporting results to the Superintendent.
  39. Is responsible for organizing the playground, lunchrooms, and noon hour for the best interests of the pupils.
  40. Is responsible for the supervision of clerical help that may be assigned to his building.
  41. Seeks the assistance of the school staff to help meet the needs of assigned students.
  42. Is responsible for attainment of goals and objectives of providing a Thorough and Efficient education.
  43. Monitors and facilitates the implementation of the district curriculum.
  44. Assigns specific duties to assistant principals to assure smooth operation of the total school program.
  45. Submits such records or reports as required by law or by the Superintendent.
  46. Submits to the Superintendent of Schools monthly reports and an annual report. All monthly reports are due in the Superintendent’s Office five days following the last day of the month. The annual report is due by June 30.
  47. Performs other related duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 Months. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
