Elementary School Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid NJ Principal Certificate of Eligibility or Standard
  2. A minimum of three years of school leadership and/or central office administrator experience.
  3. Demonstrated leadership capability in the areas
  4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  5. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S Citizenship or legal resident alien status .

JOB GOAL:

The Elementary Principal shall be the chief executive of the elementary school assigned, and shall administer the school in an efficient manner as outlined by state regulations, Board of Education policy and the direction of the Superintendent.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Shall be on duty in his/her building at least thirty minutes before the regular opening session in the morning and remain at least one hour after the close of the afternoon session. This conforms to the ABA Contract.
  2. Shall submit such records or reports as required by law or by the Superintendent.
  3. Shall, through professional standards, work cooperatively with all personnel for the best interests of the pupils. The principal of the school has many functions to perform. Basically, the principal needs to have an understanding of how children grow and learn. Particular attention shall be given by each principal to the development of an in-service training program for his teachers and a public relations program which will help the public to understand the work of the school.
  4. Shall project the philosophy, objectives, conditions and needs of the school to the community; work in harmony with the community to define a sound educational program which recognizes the needs of a changing society; and utilize community resources to enrich the learning program.
  5. Shall communicate to staff, students, parents, community and central office administration.
  6. Shall assist in the supervision of students as the need arises within the school district, as directed by the Superintendent.
  7. Shall keep abreast of the newest technological improvements and educational practice and assist in the establishment and clarification of short and long-range goals
  8. Shall participate in workshops, conferences, district committees, and render service by participating in professional organizations at national, state and local levels.
  9. Shall be responsible for the preparation of the schedule of classes and for the assignment of teachers and pupils to their proper places.
  10. Shall see that each teacher has the amount of classwork as per the BEA contract and extra-curricular duties except those specifically assigned by the Board of Education or the Superintendent.
  11. Shall complete a Total Performance Evaluation on each staff member at least once a year or as directed by the Superintendent.
  12. Shall be responsible for the reception, classification, conduct, health, promotion or retention of pupils within the building.
  13. Shall be responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records for each pupil.
  14. Shall efficiently use the resources of support personnel services.
  15. Shall supervise the curriculum and methods of instruction making provisions for continuous improvement and revision.
  16. Shall consider supervision as a cooperative process involving classroom teachers.
  17. Shall conduct classroom observations and conferences in accordance with Board of Education Policy.
  18. Shall be responsible for the testing program and report results to the Superintendent.
  19. Shall be responsible for organizing the playgrounds, lunchrooms, and noon hour for the best interests of the pupils.
  20. Shall be responsible for the supervision of clerical staff that may be assigned to his building.
  21. Shall be responsible for all textbooks, supplies, and equipment delivered to his/her building and shall keep a correct record of the number and names of the various books and equipment received. A continuous and complete inventory shall be kept on file in the Principal’s Office. A copy of the same shall be sent to the Superintendent and Business Administrator. Each principal shall require teachers to enter upon proper blanks the names of pupils and numbers of books given to each pupil. When books are returned, he/she shall require teachers to examine the same, and, if the books are found to be damaged, to assess pupils a sum commensurate with the damage done.
  22. Shall keep an itemized account of all money received for damaged books, lost books or damage done to school property, etc., a receipt to be given for all cash transactions and in June shall make a report and pay to the office of the Business Administrator all money received from this source.
  23. Shall submit to the Superintendent, at an appointed time, requisitions for necessary supplies, books and equipment and other budgetary items for the coming year, as may be required for his building.
  24. Shall prepare and assign the preparation of the School Activities Calendar prior to the opening of school in September, subject to revision from time to time, if necessary.
  25. Shall be responsible for proper supervision of all indoor and outdoor school activities and events.
  26. Shall establish and maintain a code of discipline.
  27. Shall have charge of all suspensions, but shall immediately notify the pupil’s parents of the reason for and the duration of the suspension.
  28. Shall be responsible for the safety, proper use and care of all school property. He/she shall conduct fire drills and evacuation drills as required by law and the Superintendent.
  29. Shall see that all rules and regulations affecting teachers or pupils are brought to the attention of those concerned and that such rules and regulations are observed.
  30. Shall report promptly any neglect of duty on the part of any teacher or any employee to the Office of the Superintendent.
  31. Shall submit all communications to the Board from the principals, supervisors, teachers or other employees through the Superintendent. Nothing in this paragraph shall be construed as denying the right of any member in the school system to appeal to the Board.
  32. Shall devote his/her entire time during school sessions to the performance of his various duties.
  33. Shall report to the supervising custodian any repairs which should be made.
  34. Shall establish rules for the administration of the school, such rules to be approved by the Superintendent.
  35. Shall be responsible for attainment of goals and objectives of providing a thorough and efficient education.
  36. Shall assign specific duties to assistant principal(s) to assure smooth operation of the total school program.
  37. Shall create a climate that is conducive to experimentation and in which teachers can share ideas.
  38. Shall cooperate in recruiting, interviewing, evaluating and recommending candidates for employment.
  39. Insures proper implementation of negotiated contracts between staff and the Board of Education.
  40. Shall submit to the Superintendent of Schools monthly reports and an annual report. All monthly reports are due in the Superintendent’s Office five (5) days following the last day of the month. The annual report is due by June 30.
  41. Shall perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 Months. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
