POSITION:

Reading Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Reading Specialist Certification as determined by New Jersey State certification requirements and the Bridgeton Board of Education
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of content and methodology in one or more of the key areas: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
  3. Professional demeanor/supportive interpersonal skills

REPORTS TO:

Assistant Superintendent & Director of ELA

JOB GOAL:

A Reading Specialist applies his/her extensive knowledge in reading to support student proficiency. This educator also assists teachers in developing effective instructional practices for students identified as struggling readers.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Utilize the district's universal screener(s) and other relevant data to identify students who may need support in developing literacy-related skills.
  2. Provide intensive remediation for students at-risk. Use content knowledge and available resources to support literacy instruction.
  3. Assist teachers in assessing and diagnosing students' reading proficiency and in developing strategies to address areas of need.
  4. Oversee the administration of the annual K-2 Dyslexia screening and analyze resulting data.
  5. Coordinate resources with the l&RS Team to provide supports for teachers of students facing reading challenges.
  6. Work in partnership with administrative and instructional personnel to improve classroom and literacy across multiple disciplines.
  7. Turnkey training information via staff meetings and PLCs. Distribute said information to support teachers' use of materials associated with best instructional practices.
  8. Communicate literacy related-issues to the broader academic community via the district's Curriculum Newsletter.
  9. Maintain accurate and detailed paperwork and complete all required reports in a timely fashion.
  10. In concert with the Office of Curriculum & Instruction, participate in and implement professional development trainings.
  11. Keep abreast of current trends/data; attend professional development trainings as related to the position.
  12. Perform such other duties as assigned by district administration.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

10 Months. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
