POSITION:

Head School Nurse

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid state license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of New Jersey.
  2. Certificate as a public school nurse and a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  3. Three years of successful experience as a School Nurse.

REPORTS TO:

Building principal and/or other appropriately certificated superior as designated by the Superintendent

JOB GOAL:

Conducts a comprehensive health service program at the building level and coordinates the district's health services program; provides the Board of Education with responsible, professional assistance with communications and operational issues involving district health services.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serves as a liaison, with the Director of Human Resources, between the school physician and nurses.
  2. Remains abreast of current developments in the health field through education and active participation in professional organizations. Serves as a liaison between the school physician and district staff.
  3. Oversees the development and maintenance of the annual School Nursing Services Plan in conjunction with the school physician. The annual School Nursing Services Plan will include a description of basic nursing services provided; a summary of the specific medical needs of individual students and how they will be addressed; a description of emergency nursing services; detailed nursing assignments for all school buildings; and a description of nursing and additional medical services to schools.
  4. Confers with students, staff and parents concerning health issues. Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings, with a prepared agenda, in cooperation with the Director of Human Resources.
  5. Assists in the coordination of in-service training for nurses and staff when appropriate
  6. Formulates policies and procedures for Health Services.
  7. Works congruently with other professional personnel in developing the Health Education curriculum.
  8. Acts as a resource person in Health Education.
  9. Collects, and disseminates to the district nursing staff, information relevant to the health services program (e.g., professional development materials; changes in relevant legal requirements).
  10. Administers prescribed medication to students as per specified approved written policy when needed. Reviews the school health program and recommends changes as needed.
  11. Aids in early identification and report of child's abuse or neglect.
  12. Maintains communication with district nurses.
  13. Distributes and relays all relevant information to district nurses.
  14. Responsible for the preparation of the dental program.
  15. Collates necessary data for surveys as required by the Department of Education and/or Department of Health.
  16. Work with the Human Resources Department to ensure the district has internal nursing coverage.
  17. Shall perform other related duties as assigned by the Building Principal and Director of Human Resources.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

10 Months. Salary to be determined by the Bridgeton Education Association guide.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
